The road out of Málaga climbs steadily away from the Mediterranean coast. Within thirty minutes, the high-rise resorts give way to quiet pine forests and dramatic limestone cliffs. Past the hillside village of Monda, the Costa del Sol fades behind you, replaced by the silent expanse of the Sierra de las Nieves.

‍

This mountain range earned its name from the snow once harvested here by hand, packed into stone wells, and transported to the coast as ice. Protected progressively for over three decades, the area was named a natural park in 1989, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1995, and officially declared Spain's sixteenth national park in 2021. The designation protects 23,000 hectares of wild terrain, most notably the Abies pinsapo, an ancient Spanish fir tree that grows wild in only a few southern mountain ranges. Above the forest line, La Torrecilla rises to 1,919 metres, and griffon vultures ride the thermals over the limestone. Spanish ibex navigate the crags.

‍

In the foothills below sits Shanti-Som, a secluded and intimate retreat of just fifteen rooms.

The Retreat

Shanti-Som opened in 2011, a decade before the surrounding land gained national park status. It remains intentionally small. While the nearby coastal enclave of Marbella thrives on high visibility, Shanti-Som operates on a different premise, and says so plainly. What it sells is the absence of pressure rather than polish.

‍

The small scale defines the experience. With fifteen rooms, the property never feels crowded, and guests arrive and depart on flexible schedules rather than rigid group cohorts. The environment is adults-only, quiet, and grounded in the natural surroundings.

‍

Stays are structured around individual health pathways rather than open-ended hotel bookings.

Relaxation: A brief, flexible stay designed for basic rest.

Yoga: Two daily practice sessions covering Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative, and Ashtanga modalities.

Pilates: Daily mat work plus at least one private reformer session.

Detox: A targeted protocol using fresh juices, broths, and daily check-ins with a wellness coach.

Healing: Gentle support tailored for recovery from burnout, illness, or life transitions.

Weight Management: Focuses on nutritional consultation and portion awareness rather than restrictive dieting.

‍

Daily life across every program follows a steady, restorative rhythm. Guests begin with early morning meditation and yoga, followed by open afternoons to explore the sauna, pool, or trails into the sierra. Guided hikes, breathwork, and optional cold-plunge sessions fill the day. Evenings conclude at 9:30 PM with a guided breathwork and meditation audio, offering a quiet, singular instruction to close the day: rest properly.

Spa and Kitchen

The on-site spa partners with Spanish botanical line Alqvimia and French skincare house Biologique Recherche, offering traditional massage, facials, and reflexology alongside energy therapies like Reiki and Harmonyum. Guests can also schedule non-diagnostic health evaluations covering body composition, blood pressure, and blood work, establishing a baseline for their personal physician back home.

‍

Meals are integrated into every program. By the kitchen's own description, it emphasizes fresh, whole foods without processed ingredients, and it caters to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free requirements.

The Women's Sleep Retreat

Alongside its standing offerings, Shanti-Som hosts specialized, limited-capacity events. From January 27 through 31, 2027, the property will run a dedicated Women's Wellness Retreat focused on sleep and capped at twelve participants.

‍

The program targets chronic fatigue stemming from prolonged stress, midlife hormonal shifts, and nervous system overload. Before arriving, participants complete a detailed sleep assessment reviewed by guest expert Kathryn Pinkham, founder of The Insomnia Clinic. Rather than delivering generic lectures, Pinkham designs two interactive workshops directly around the assessments of the women in attendance. Each guest leaves with an individualized action plan.

‍

The four-night stay includes daily yoga and meditation, alongside mat Pilates, a group fitness session, a sound bath, a guided hike into the sierra, and a spa treatment, with accommodation folded into a single package.

‍

The sleep program is explicitly tailored for common insomnia and night-waking, advising that it is not suited for complex clinical conditions such as untreated sleep apnea, severe depression, bipolar disorder, or PTSD.

‍

The Expert and Method

Kathryn Pinkham began her career as a psychological practitioner in NHS mental health services before founding The Insomnia Clinic. Her work centers on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia under current clinical guidelines.

‍

CBT-I operates on the principle that initial triggers for insomnia are rarely what perpetuate it over time. Instead, secondary behavioral patterns, such as lying awake for hours, clock-watching, or anxious anticipation of bedtime, keep the nervous system in a state of high alert. Pinkham applies this specifically to women navigating perimenopause and menopause. An initial hot flash, as she argues, can train the brain to associate the bed with vigilance long after hormonal fluctuations stabilize. CBT-I systematically resets these associations.

Looking Ahead

A second Shanti-Som location is currently under development along Portugal's eastern Algarve coast. Set within a restored nineteenth-century farmhouse near Olhão and Tavira, the twenty-two-room property is expected to open in 2027 with a similar approach.

‍

For now, the original remains in the foothills of the Sierra de las Nieves, with one week in January 2027 when the whole place turns its attention to sleep.
